Oh Boy, what a week!!! I got an F-

Well, hello. I think I finally let took a breath today for the first time all week. It wasn't all that bad, but just kinda crazy! Well it all began on Monday morning at 4am...as usual. I work at 5 every Monday morning before school..then go to school...then go back to work until about 7pm. It always makes for a really long day. Well anyway, Tuesday was my first real day at the VA. I saw a class 2 in the morning and a class 3 in the afternoon. He was a really easy 3, so I was able to finish him up AND I even got to place Arestin in a few of his pockets! It was so awesome and so much fun!!! It was a lot easier than I was thinking it would be. I seriously can't wait to do it again. This poor guy had a couple of 12mm pockets! I have never had any that deep! I sucked at my probing though. A couple of them I had down as a 7 but they were really 10mm's!! Isn't that crazy?! He had a wisdom tooth still so that is practically impossible to keep clean clear the heck back there for the 65 years of his life. Well, we told him that he needed to get in to see a periodontist and will need that tooth removed. I should have thought to check mobility but being my forgetful self, I didn't :) Oh well. I will try to remember that for next time. The VA was successful and it was a really good experience. I was glad that I wasn't lucky like Joelle to get a man that hocks loogie's (sp??) into a cup every 5 seconds. Disgusting. That was hilarious. Going to the Va really makes me dread getting old. There really is nothing good about it..

That night we had a little study session that involved a little bit of dental meds, and a lot of binging on not-so-good-for-you foods, and chatting away. We did get a lot accomplished by the time we left Centerville at midnight. I couldn't get up the next morning! I took my meds test and then the next morning (today) was mock boards. I failed miserably!!!! It wasn't too bad though. I was completely ok with it. I got docked for my bad xrays and I knew they weren't that great going in. Then I put that there were 3 mm of recession on a tooth when there wasn't any at all..HA! And THEN I missed 4 spots of calculus. Dang! Oh well. It really was a wakeup call to everyone today. We are having a typodont party now. My goodness...I am actually going to have to put some extra effort into this scaling thing ;)

Tomorrow is local anesthesia again. I'm so excited. I love giving Melissa shots!!

October 19, 2006

This morning we had a lab with wheelchair transfers, glucose and saliva tests, and then we practiced with the right and left ultrasonic scalers. Oh and we also saw the sonic scaler. I don't think I'm a very big fan of it.

My patient for this afternoon canceled on me last night (go figure). I'm so tired of people canceling and not showing up! I don't think they realize what an inconvenience it is for people! I for sure am way more considerate about appointments I make ever since I've started hygiene school. So I called people on the resource list and ended up finding someone who could come in and I actually have known this kid for years! So he was an easy 1B and had to be out of here by 2:15. I actually finished him up a little bit before 2. Now I'm over my 1B's by 8 quads! Oh well, I guess it's extra quads for me :) I got a set of xrays too, so that is always good. I still feel like I need help with my scaling skills. 1B's are so easy! I need some 2's and 3's to really test my skills and make me work. Right now I'm waiting for my mockboard to come in to get some PA's of the quad I'm going to clean. I hope he shows up and that he will show up next week too. I guess he no-showed at Midtown once before so that makes me a bit nervous.

Ok, so he came and told me he probably can't come in next Thursday because he will be out of town. He might be able to change his appt in California. I hope so...he's supposed to call me tomorrow. My goodness, what a pain. It will be nice to not have to schedule my own patients one day :)

October 12, 2006

Hey, today my patient didn't show this morning, so luckily Ashley had a patient for me! She was just 13 and counted as a 1B. She needed 4 sealants so I did 2 of them and was able to pass off my PE.

Later this afternoon, I had another 1B. He had to leave early so I finished him up and sent him on his way...that's all :)

It's October!!

This morning I had 2 of the cutest little kids...twin 5 year old girls! They were adorable and so good!! I got 2 sets of bitewings from them and 4 quads of a 1A of course :) It was so great.

This afternoon I had a returning patient that was a class 5. He was so very nice and appreciative. I was able to get most of the calculus off of him except on the lower lingual anteriors. I still am having a hard time really scaling. I feel like I don't know how to scale...oh well, practice practice..
